OUR HISTORY

The Deming Luna County Commission on Aging is a non-profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors and Executive Director, Julie Bolton.  Our mission is to promote independence, preserve dignity, and enhance life quality for a diverse population of older adults and people with disabilities.  Our purpose is to provide services and programs to frail elderly, 60 years of age and older living in the City of Deming, Village of Columbus and Luna County.  The Commission on Aging has been providing services to senior citizens in Luna County for over 35 years.

The Deming Luna County Commission on Aging manages the Deming Senior Center and the Deming Luna County Adult Day Care Facility.  The Building was named “The Robert L. Beckett Senior Complex” in honor of former Deming Mayor, Robert Beckett. The late Mr. Beckett served on the Board of Directors of the Commission on Aging for eight years, three of which he served as Chairman.  For many years he played a role in obtaining funding for the services and programs provided to the senior citizens of Luna County, as well as the massive expansion of the Center performed in 2001/2002. In 2008, he was named Outstanding Senior Citizen in the state of New Mexico by the Aging and Long Term Service Department.

The Deming Senior Center is designed to be a “one-stop-shop” for information, services and support to the senior population in Luna County.  The objective of the Center is to be a resource to seniors through on-site visits or telephone calls to find answers to questions concerning Federal, State, and local programs, services and benefits that are available to them.

The services and programs available through the Deming Senior Center are provided for a suggested donation only for seniors 60 years of age or older and for spouses of, widows/widowers of anyone who is 60 years of age or older.  These donations are very important for the operation and availability of the services and programs offered at the Center.

The Robert L. Beckett Senior Complex (Deming Senior Center) is located at 800 South Granite Street in Deming, New Mexico. The telephone number is (575) 546-8823, fax number (575) 546-4076 and the e-mail address for Julie Bolton, executive director, is [email protected].

AMERICAN RECOVERY & REINVESTMENT ACT

On Feb. 13, 2009, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 at the urging of President Obama, who signed it into law four days later. A direct response to the economic crisis, the Recovery Act has three immediate goals:

• Create new jobs and save existing ones

• Spur economic activity and invest in long-term growth

• Foster unprecedented levels of accountability and transparency in government spending

The Deming Senior Center received funding from this act to enhance the meals program. The Center was one of two senior programs that were chosen by the Area Agency on Aging to have pictures portraying this funding in action. The pictures shown in the history section were taken by Mark Holm, a freelance photographer who was chosen by the State to photograph different industries in New Mexico that were utilizing this funding.
